Arsenal will target Jose Gimenez this summer as Liverpool are courting their No 1 defensive target Stefan de Vrij, according to reports.
Gimenez, the Atletico Madrid and Uruguay defender, has established himself as one of the most highly-rated young defenders in world football since his 2013 transfer to LaLiga.
He has made 113 appearances for Atleti, and has long been touted to make the step to one of Europe’s biggest teams.
El Gol Digital say Arsenal could be that team, as Arsene Wenger has plans to strengthen his defence during the summer transfer window.
Wenger had been keen to bring Stefan de Vrij, the Netherlands centre-back, to north London when his Lazio contract expires at the end of 2017/18; De Vrij has confirmed he will not pen a new deal, meaning one of Europe’s best defenders will be available for free in just a few months.
However, Arsenal have admitted defeat in their pursuit of De Vrij, as Liverpool have become front runners for the 26-year-old.
In place of De Vrij, Arsenal are considering an approach for Gimenez, who has a release clause of around £57m.
