Jose Gimenez broke down in tears before the final whistle during Uruguay’s World Cup defeat defeat to France.
The Atletico Madrid defender was seen crying in the 89th minute as it became increasingly certain that the Uruguayans would be eliminated.
Rafa Varane and Antoine Griezmann were the goalscorers as Les Bleus knocked Uruguay out with a 2-0 victory, denying them a place in the semi-finals.
Emotions always run high in such important moments, and the World Cup has seen its fair share of tears, but they usually come once the game has finished.
Gary Neville, who was commentating for ITV, was unimpressed by the incident and voiced his disapproval.
He said: “I’m all for emotion and passion but that’s embarrassing.”
